About Me

Guys, here's the truth.

For too many years my dreams lived only on the pages of my journal.  Ideas that invigorated me with passion, hopes that were rooted in who I was, goals that I yearned to accomplish - they lived, and died, in my journal.

I know.  Maybe that's a little heavy for an About Me section on a website.  Hear me out.  Fear can be paralyzing.  Doing hard things can be defeating.  The combination of those two obstacles surmounted to a weight that the heft of my dreams couldn't compete with for a long time.

Then I watched a Mel Robbins Ted Talk one day as my overweight mom-bod rode the stationary bike in our Pittsburgh basement, random toilet in the background and all.  Gotta set the scene, right? Mel talked about her 5,4,3,2,1 method that involved counting down from 5 to jumpstart you into doing whatever it is you needed to be doing in that moment.  At the time, I was trying to lose weight from our second baby and feeling like I lacked purpose.

Something about this Ted Talk really resonated with me.  The premise was that if you didn't just do what you needed to do, you would spend too much time thinking about it and you wouldn't actually end up getting it done.  I am an overthinker at heart.  With the season of life I was in as a stay at home mom, I suddenly realized that if I didn't just START, I was never going to make any progress on anything.

So... my journey towards living a more bold life began.  I no longer required having it all figured out before I started.  I became friends with failure and didn't let fear have a grip on me.  Did I still get scared? Yep. But I still went for whatever was scary in that moment. Did I do everything right? Nope! Lost money, lost time, and kept going.  Each failure has been one more way I learned how not to do something.

What, then, is Oak Hill Millworks?  OHM is a small business that creates content focused on DIY, tool reviews, and small business ownership!  I hope to educate, empower, and entertain anyone who visits me on the web or in person and I'll be glad to learn from you too!  When I am not creating content, I'm helping other people market their businesses through a multitude of promotional products that can be customized with my laser.
